There were rock ‘n’ rollers, groovy dudes, Twiggy-look-alikes, classy people, Mad Men enthusiasts and more. While the […]

While the Anonymous Choir and the Ventures Cover Band gave a riveting live show of 60s soul music in the McGuire Theater, other revelers amped up the theme in the photo booth with psychedelic and oversized props, and the craftiest of guests sewed together clever stuffed protest signs out of burlap à la Oldenburg.

“I start every collection with one word.” —Rei Kawakubo

Fashion designer Rei Kawakubo of Comme des Garcons reportedly gives a single word as instruction to her pattern makers as they begin working on a new collection. In this spirit, Walker members gave one word (or two) in response to Friday’s A Think & A Drink: Member Event, which included a private tour of Dance Works III: Merce Cunningham/Rei Kawakubo with curator Betsy Carpenter, Walker Cunningham Research Fellow Abi Sebaly, fashion designer Emma Berg, and choreographer, curator, performer, and producer Laurie Van Wieren, followed by drinks and small bites in the Garden Terrace Room. Searching for (my) Alter Ego

2012 Walker Staff Halloween Party (that’s me as the Cheshire Cat wearing pink cords and a purple hoodie procured at the CostumeRentals sale)

I have always loved costumes. I would dress up as a kid at any opportunity. I worked in the costume shop in college and designed costumes for a few shows in recent years. I still have a box of “dress up clothes” in my basement that I put to good use as often as possible. So, heading to the Guthrie Theater and Children’s Theater‘s joint costume storage, CostumeRentals, was my version of a pilgrimage.

The occasion was sourcing items for the activity “Cindy’s Studio” for the upcoming After Hours: Alter Ego exhibition preview party for Cindy Sherman on November 9.  (more…)
