Become a Walker Volunteer

Thank you for your interest in becoming a volunteer with the Walker Art Center. When you donate your time and talents to the Walker, you’re not only making an important contribution to the arts community but also learning new skills and making new friends in the arts.

To become a volunteer, your first step is to join us for an orientation in the Walker Cinema. Attending an orientation is mandatory for all volunteers, and we assure you that it will be worth your time.

What do you enjoy most in your day to day?

Marco Suemnick

I enjoy connecting with people, whether it is with friends or strangers in everyday life. Relating to people always lifts my spirits and brings positivity to my day.

How long have you been a volunteer at WAC?

Suemnick

I have been a Walker volunteer for about 5 years and have loved every day of volunteering. I have met and conversed with so many amazing artists over just the short time (Chuck Close, Cindy Sherman). Not only do I meet amazing artists, but I also have an opportunity to stay better connected to the institution and the topic of art that I love so much. Through the volunteer program, I have gone on behind the scene tours which have enriched my life and given me a greater understanding of the operations and the thought process that goes into making this a top rated institution.

What positive attributes do you contribute to WAC?

Suemnick

I remember the day exactly when I was interviewing for the Information Guide Volunteer position with Crystal. I was so excited to use my background in the arts, customer service and a passion for local organizations. I knew with just those core attributes it would be a great fit. I’ve studied Art, Architecture, and Marketing and worked in sales, training, and customer service for a long time and since being at the Walker Art Center, each of those things have grown. It is an amazing place where ones skills grow as you give your time and effort to it.

What do you do for work?

 Suemnick

I received my bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts from CVA and my master’s degree in Marketing Management at University of St. Thomas. I am able to apply my education to my personal arts career as well as to other artists and galleries by providing marketing and branding support.. Most commonly, I help to move business to the next level by using unique personalized marketing and branding tips.  It’s challenging and rewarding, but I love being involved in the arts and wouldn’t have it any other way.

What do you do in your free time?

Suemnick

When I am not working or volunteering I like to produce art, connect with friends, use social media, landscape, travel and experience new and familiar places within the Twin Cities.

What is your favorite art pastime?

Suemnick

I am most interested in painting and drawing but Walker has definitely expanded my interests in mediums, styles and periods. My two latest series of art that I am working on are; urban landscapes, using pen and ink to draw what I call a “skeletal” base in architectural forms then going over those forms with monochromatic gouache, and the second is cut paper to create a lace like effect by using symbolic patterns in a single sheet of mostly white or off white watercolor paper. Both are unique and therefore evoke different reactions. In addition to creating art I also like to stay connected to what other artists are doing so it’s not uncommon for me to visit between 3-6 galleries, studios or other openings on a busy arts night to show support.

Why the Walker?

Suemnick

I am so thankful for this volunteer position; it has given me more than I hoped for. I am more connected to the Walker Art Center than I would have been without it. I feel proud to say that I am a component responsible for enriching the journey of the guest that come through the doors and also proud of the great work being presented by this organization.
