To accompany From Here to There: Alec Soth’s America, which opens here at the Walker Art Center on Sunday, September 12th, Alec Soth is creating a series of Flickr group projects that are linked to his photographic process. Anyone can take part, and we hope you do.  Alec will be commenting  and writing here and on his own blog over the run of the exhibition, and we will be posting some of your photographs here also.  Check out the project on his Flickr page, or read about it below:

From Alec:

Assignment #1: The Treasure Hunt

A trick I use to find pictures is to create a list of things I’m curious about that then go and beat the bushes. Even if I don’t find what I’m looking for, it gets me out the door and moving around in the world.

For our first Flickr Project, I’ve created a list of 10 items to photograph. Shoot as many as you can and post them in our group pool, and then check out our “Discussions” pages to talk about your work. I’ll post some of my favorite images on the Walker Art Center Visual Arts blog. On October 1st I’ll pick my favorite treasure hunter and send them a signed copy of the From Here to There catalogue. You can check out an interview with me from this book here.

Here’s the list:

Pilots
Amateur Paintings
Unusually Tall People
Museum Guards
Sleeping Children
Neighborhood Bars
Supermarket Cashiers
Sheep
Sedans
Suitcases

Happy Hunting,

Alec

P.S. You’ll get extra points for combining pictures—I’d love to see an unusually tall museum guard holding a suitcase.

I tried to check out the interview but the link does not appear to be working for me.Not sure if it’s just me.Great idea and looking forward to see where the list leads me.

  • Looking at Alec’s Niagara by my students through a question regarding manner of working lent to an interesting discussion about shooting strategies that photographs use as preconceived strategies. It seems to me that in Wing Young Huie: Lake Street project, Jim Brandenberg’s Chased by the Light and Tom Arndt’s approaches can be deconstructed to determine if a photographer is utilizing a problem solving approach to capture images.

A group of Blake Advanced Photography students recently considered Alec’s work with these to considerations in mind. They discovered that likely in Niagara the image of the falls was a destination that Alec sought out (Seekings) while the accompanying images were discovered (Findings).

Beginning students from The Blake School will visit the exhibit next week on October 5th. As a reflection and response to this experience they will pair images of Alec’s with their own in a collection they build supported by ArtsConnectEd that illustrates their understanding and application of the two approaches of seeking and finding.

Any thoughts about this pedagogy would be welcome.
