WACTAC with Paul Chan

On Thursday September 17th, Paul Chan graced WACTAC with his outgoing and opinionated presence. He immediately captured our attention with his dulcet voice, from which came his vibrant willingness to jump into conversation with our rowdy group. His multidisciplinary  art awed us, and we were privileged to have our own “Artist Talk” with him. Members and leaders of WACTAC asked Chan about his inspirations and influences. He responded with assuredness in the truth about his work in a way that made us (at least me) ponder the deeper meaning of mine and others’ artworks. He spoke about his experiences with devastation and cruelty, from his [loathed theatre] work in Katrina demolished New Orleans to his illegitimate arrest at the 2004 RNC. Chan  also talked about the artists’ “window” (which he removes in his film The 7th Light), how viewers typically visualize and analyze what an artist “frames” and misses the relative aspect of the work. He even ventured to amuse us with his Top 5 Things That Would Get You Arrested in Minneapolis, which he matter-of-factly renamed the Top 5 Things We Ought to do Together to Make Something Interesting.
