Jammin’ to da Low-cal scene

I make a point of not leaving my house unless absolutely necessary (see: reasons).

Up until moments ago, I’d avoid going to places I thought where everyone stretched their ego to the limits like a spandex jumpsuit from American Apparel, but recently I’ve had those few helping hands pull me out from under the covers and remove the worn and overplayed discs of Roseanne from out of my dvd player to bring me out into the real world (see below)

Let’s get to steppin’: If someone asked me about music in Minneapolis right now and what my stance was, I’d have to say say spread eagle and throwin up the horns.

A few days ago I saw this band Voyager play and there was a girl doing just that, her arm straight up in the air, she was rocking her long hair back and forth, metal-style, and then at the end of a song let out a majestic ‘woo!’ and took a swig of her beer to cool off before rocking out a little more. Despite what this fan may communicate, Voyager was anything but ridiculous, and, if anything, ridiculously good. I recommend checking out their myspace, as linked above. They played one of the coolest shows I’ve seen, and I’m kicking myself for not going to see them sooner. Unfortunately, it was their last show before breaking up and the virtuoso keyboardist is absconding to the west. But lucky for us, they have an album coming out and I’ve heard good things. I’ll keep the two people who read this posted.

The drummer from Voyager also plays in this two man band Tender Meat which has the phunky keyboards as well, but has kind of a throbbing repetition to the music that makes you feel like you’re in a broken machine or something. Hey! I could be a music critic. Nevertheless, they tend(er) a pretty cool hypnotic sound and are worth checking out because they still exist as a band and you might see them play sometime.

The same night I saw Voyager I also got to see Knife World, another two-man band which, every time a friend referred to it, I thought they were talking about the store that used to be in Southdale mall back in the day. I kept thinking to myself, what are my friends doing hanging out with dudes with ponytails and a penchant for medieval swords? When I saw the actual band they were talking about, I thought “well, close enough.” Knife World is an excessively solid guitar driven rock band that’s great to watch given that the guitarist has a lifetime of experience in being an axe-masta. He kind of looks like my main man, the Nuge.

Except more dope. They also have a record (self-titled) with sweet 3-D art and red&blue 3-d glasses cut into the center of the vinyl for viewing purposes. You can purchase it here.

Have a great weekend

  1. Don’t you think the painter of the Nuge’ would have painting the crotch a little bigger? I mean, don’t get me wrong, I don’t doubt Ted’s sack abilities, but this album cover might make me wonder if with him it’s more about “the motion of the ocean,” if you get my drift…
