Patrick Scully’s beautiful choreography and fine dancers were the saviors of the 2011 Choreographer’s Evening. If only they could have performed the entire evening! Otherwise, the choreography generally ranged from poorly conceived to atrocious, with few exceptions.

High points for me were pieces by Patrick Scully (graceful and lovely), Jenny Penanz (amazingly fluid and athletic), Jaime Carrera (hilarious), Mad King Thomas (likewise). But the most memorable was HIJACK’s – and in particular, the sound. The incessant repetition of that six-second Elton John clip was mesmerizing, keeping us on the edge of our seats with anticip… anticip… anticip… anticip… and never any “ation” to release us. Overlaying that with Barber’s Adagio was extremely evocative. Hats off to Kristin Van Loon.

The closing piece by the mysterious Debbie, Secretary was memorable for other reasons. Thumbs up for both the performance and the not-exactly-explanatory artist’s statement in the program.

All in all, not the best Choreographer’s Evening I’ve ever attended, but not the worst, either. Glad I was there.

I think they should just rename Choreographers Evening “Kenna Cottman”

Fantastic line-up; the best curated line-up since Sandy Augustine’s 2006 CE – hats off to Chris Schlichting for making an evening that avoided program sagging. Very impressive.

I had such an amazing time last night! Many thanks to Chris for skillfully curating an evening (and show order!) that showed so many interesting approached to making a dance, while keeping me engaged. Hats off to the choreographers and performers for giving- what felt to me- such generous consideration to their audience members and the task of making a connection with them. I was moved, confused, challenged, and humored, and felt all sorts of relief that so many artists are making sense of the world using the vehicle of dance. Here in the Twin Cities we are, indeed, lucky.

    @ Elizbeth.
I think that if you’re going to blanket-slam the entire evening you at least owe the artists (who, though you didn’t like what they made, did work hard on their art) at least a brief explanation of what you found atrocious and why you didn’t like it and perhaps you could flesh out what you mean by “poorly conceived.”
