Mr. King will be sharing some insights into his restless creativity tonight with Making Music at 8 pm in the McGuire Theater. The event is free. It promises to be anything but hypnagogic as can be expected of anyone whose voicemail features themselves singing “Surrender” (as reported by MN Monthly–I’m assuming it’s the famous rendition done by another King). If it’s Diana Ross’s version, even better. Any King insider willing to dish the deets?
Tomorrow night King for Two Days: A Dave King Celebration opens with performances by the Bad Plus, Happy Apple, and New York-based improvisation group Buffalo Collision. Saturday features two newer King groups: instrumental electronica from Golden Valley is Now and avant-roots group Dave King Trucking Company.
mnartists.org has a new article about the Dave King Celebration well worth checking out. Even though the spotlight is on King this weekend, the music is really about the collaborative spirit he brings to every project: “‘I have a voracious appetite for good music,'” King said in Minneapolis-St. Paul Magazine, “‘and I surround myself with hugely talented people. It’s this music that’s being celebrated. I’m just one component of it’–albeit a brilliant, essential component.”
Let the fills and free jazz begin.
