The just-announced nominees for the Smithsonian’s prestigious Lucelia Artist Award includes several names familiar to Walker visitors. Founded in 2001, the award is given to an American artist under age 50 and “honors the achievement and promise of living artists who enrich our society with their insight and creativity.” Past winners are Andrea Zittel, Kara Walker, Rirkrit Tiravanija, Liz Larner, and Jorge Pardo. This year’s nominees:
- Laylah Ali, who created a billboard for the Walker in ‘04
- Janine Antoni
- The Center for Land Use Interpretation (Matthew Coolidge), featured in our design lecture series in ‘04
- Spencer Finch
- Tom Friedman
- Maureen Gallace
- Ellen Gallagher, featured in the Collection
- Jon Kessler
- Byron Kim, who collaborate with Glenn Ligon on a work in the Collection
- Glenn Ligon, featured in the Collection
- Julie Mehretu, had her first museum solo show here
- Tony Oursler, in the Collection and part of last month’s performance, Don’t Trust Anyone Over 30
- Raymond Pettibon, featured in the Collection
- Catherine Sullivan, a Walker artist-in-residence this year.
