Rob, I'm sorry to contradict this but only one critic has suggested that Kent Mackenzie plied his subjects with alcohol. And that critic was clearly irresponsible and took a joke a cameraman said fifty years ago as a serious conclusion.

Besides dozens of conversations with the crew about the making of the film, we have thousands of documents and letters from the making of the film and all it shows is that a) Mackenzie paid the participants for their appearances in the film and in fairly generous terms for 1959 at that and b) the only time that Mackenzie actually paid for the "booze" was the night he opened the bar to the neighborhood to shoot a party scene. (It's the one where the two men are dancing.) One of the cameramen joked that that night cost more in drinks than most of the film's budget. This was clearly an exaggeration and was only about that one night. It would be nice if the film was judged for itself rather than irresponsible and inaccurate allegations from another critic who clearly did not read the press kit or interview the people involved with the film. I'd be glad to send you a DVD and a list of The Exiles people to talk to!
