Dear Walker friends,

Just returned from Rotterdam. Back in the Art Center yet and just felt like visiting your blog side. Great to see that the ZIDANE film is such a success even with the US not being a real soccer country. The film got mixed reviews in Europe, which hasn't anything to do with the weird and controversial 'adieu' salute of the famous player at his last match during the last World Championship. However by watching the film one can understand somehow why it came so far. The ZIDANE film might be in and outside the art circles overrated, but it stays still an impressive document. Although my greater expectation towards the form and the images (so much has been written about the number of cameras and the uniqueness of the artists' intentions -- but they didn't fullfill to my opinion the longed for esthetic) it must be said that the soundtrack is more intriguing and saves the film and the images. What touched me the most in it is that they dismantle the hero glow over Zidane and isolate him as a fragile, maybe genius human being. As Arabic playing in the French team was for sure in contradiction with the growing extreme right policies in France -and I am afraid that by the next election Le Pen will beat unfurtonately back- ... for that reason became Zidane more than a soccer player ... but as the film shows it was a lonely battle on the field. Greetings from Belgium.
