As a participant in this workshop, I thought I would leave some additional comments, particularly as this is being written at the culmination of day 2 of the workshop. I have found that the design centered approach is a marvelous way to focus both teaching and learning on many of those skills that are certainly to become core for students to really being able to evolve into creative thinkers and idea / concept generators. These are the attributes that seem to be what many current indicators are pointing to as being essential for the successful and necessary evolution of our society. The directedness of the process that is embedded in desgin-based instruction allows for considered and thoughtful engagement in problem identification and solution creation that also opens the door to cross curricular exploration. Additionally, this type of an approach to education provides a marvelous opportunity for student-directed learning that will have the built-in capacity for their engagement with the world and the real potential for contributing to the reshaping of a better future. I have to say that as a visual arts instructor, I also find great excitement in the larger role that visual arts and artists can and ought to be playing as active participants in helping to redefine a more humane and sustainable tomorrow (the picture of me in the 'bag hat' above, notwithstanding ).
