Yesterday, the Education and Community Programs staff took a field trip to the Chambers, a luxury art hotel owned by contemporary art collector/Walker board member Ralph Burnet. The hotel features over 200 artworks spread throughout every public and private space including synchronized monitors in the bathrooms and hallways displaying video art by local and internationally known artists, a massive winding four story stairwell mural by Juxtaposition Arts, and original art by Damien Hirst, Angus Fairhurst, Gary Hume, the Chapman Brothers, Ashley Bickerton, Santiago Cucullu, and Gregory Crewdson to name a few. Chambers curator Jennifer Phelps kindly showed us some of the private spaces – Meeting Rooms “ A,” “ R,” and “ T,” the “ Landscape” suite, and the exclusive “ Rock Star” suite.

If you are interested in seeing and hearing more about the art in Chambers check out this interview with owner Ralph Burnett.

Overall the tour was a fun way to spend lunch hour. As we were walking out we spotted Burnet having lunch with Fox 9’s news anchor Robyne Robinson – CJ, I hope you got the scoop.

Here’s some video from the March of Madness: Bands on the Run! of The Chosen Few, a Twin Cities rap super group made up of DJ Snuggles, FIC aka Fiction, Guardians of Balance, Illuminous 3, Mazta I, Soul Tools (King Karnov & Reggie Reg), The C.O.R.E.(Toki Wright and AD), and Trama Sutra. You know the crowd loves your music when they are still dancing after 8 full hours of riding around on bikes, decoding clues, and listening to 7 other bands.

One of my goals by the end of the 5-month March of Madness: Bands on The Run! planning process was to spell Synchrocyclotron correctly. Judging by that last sentence, mission accomplished.

Here’s a snippet of Synchrocyclotron’s performance at Gesthsemane Church, the oldest church in Minneapolis.

Over 300 frisbees were given out at the March of Madness: Bands on the Run! and it looks like all of the them were thrown in the air during Skoal Kodiak’s set at the Father Hennepin Bandstand at the Stone Arch Bridge.

Last week Justin posted a clip of Skoal Kodiak memorable performance, but here’s the extended version.

The set ended with lead singer Markus Lukenheimer saying, “A frisbee hit the power strip and turned me off!” On top of that, the cops (or 2 actors that looked like cops) showed up, shut the down the show, and issued noise violations to the crowd.

How often do you get to see a vehicle that is part parade float and part rock and roll stage zoom around a 100 year old church? If you weren’t at the March of Madness: Bands on the Run!, you missed your opportunity witness it firsthand. Unfortunately, we don’t have the video of Michael Gaughan playing guitar while being wheeled around on Brett Smith’s custom made coffin, but hopefully these photos do justice to this truly surreal moment.

Check out the footage of Brother and Sister’s performance (Yes, he is actually drawing a picture while playing the guitar!):

Check back in the coming days for video of Synchrocyclotron, The Chosen Few, and Skoal Kodiak.
