This poster by M/M (Paris) is one of two works in our graphic design show to have been previously exhibited at the Walker (the other is Re- Magazine by Jop van Bennekom). The M/M (Paris) poster in fact is in our permanent collection as part of a larger work by Philippe Parreno and Pierre Huyghe. The work features Annlee, a fictional anime character purchased in Japan by the artists. Destined for narrative oblivion due to the marginal status of her role, Annlee was in a sense rescued by the artists through a licensing agreement and made available for various artistic pursuits, including an appearance in this work. The poster’s title alludes to the character’s arrested development; though spared from termination in her original context, she is consigned to perform different roles in perpetuity. Annlee is devoid of personal identity and becomes a surrogate, a cipher, or a blank slate onto which one projects an image, an identity, or a program.
